Ronald Addyman was born in Leeds in 1929. He was employed for many years by Leeds hospitals first as an electrician and then as a medical physics technician. He was appointed a chief medical physics technician in 1964. He left the NHS in 1973 for posts in the education and training sector. He is retired and lives with his wife in North Yorkshire. He has a TD for services in the Territorial Army; a BSc from Leeds University and a MA from the Open University. In 1962 he was an official visitor at the Down State Medical Centre, New York, NY. |
He was called up for National Service in December 1947. After training in England, he was sent to Libya to join the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards as a tank driver-electrical fitter. The Regiment was then part of the occupation troops in that country. He returned home in 1949. He joined the Territorial Army in 1962 as a private in the Parachute Regiment. He made 14 descents both in this country and overseas. He was Captain and Adjutant of the Leeds Rifles in 1967. He subsequently held other senior TA appointments including that of an assistant commandant of Yorkshire Army Cadet Force. He retired in the rank of lieutenant colonel. He is a Leeds Rifles trustee. His articles have been published in the journal of the Royal Engineers, the journal of the Victorian Military Society and the Leeds Catholic Post. He has also published several books on military history most, or all, of which are held by local and national libraries, the Libraries of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and the Library of Trinity College, Dublin.
